The Farm Shop in Bastuträsk – A New Old Meeting Place with a Taste of the Future
When the bobsleigh race rolled into Bastuträsk on March 15, 2025, it wasn’t just the high-speed runs that caught people’s attention. On the same day, a new gem quietly opened—Gårdsbutiken Bastuträsk, an initiative that looks both to the past and toward the future.
A New Chapter Rooted in Tradition
The initiative comes from Bastuträsk Charkuteri. With an empty premises and a growing idea to meet demand from southern Sweden, they developed the concept of a farm shop that would also serve as a hub for future e-commerce.
“During the heyday of the Holmlunds charcuterie company in the 1950s, there was retail sales here. It feels great to reconnect with that history—especially now that small-scale retail and farm shops are so popular,” says Mattias Berg, CEO of Bastuträsk Charkuteri.
From Empty Space to Living Shop
In just one month, the space was transformed—from being completely stripped out in February to being practically finished in March. The result is a shop that not only offers locally produced delicacies but also functions as a storage and logistics hub for upcoming online sales.
“It’s difficult to get our products into stores in southern Sweden. With e-commerce, we can still reach those customers. The shop here becomes a way to handle logistics—while also creating something for the local community.”
The Local Response
The response from the area has been positive. Despite being a transitional period for the industry—caught between winter and summer seasons—the shop has seen a steady flow of customers, many of them new faces.
“Of course, you wonder if it’s just the novelty factor, but every purchase is a bonus. We set a budget, and after three months it looks promising that we’ll break even.”
The farm shop has also become a new part of everyday life in the village. On Thursdays, retirees often stop by to shop for the weekend, perhaps before visiting the local inn. And for cabin owners preparing for summer, the shop has become a natural stop.
“It adds something, whether you live here or are just visiting. And if it continues to be appreciated, it benefits more people in Bastuträsk.”
With opening hours adapted to the season and staff schedules, Mattias is looking forward to the summer—and further ahead, to the hunting season and Christmas, which are the busiest periods for the charcuterie business.
Gårdsbutiken in Bastuträsk is more than just a place to shop. It’s an example of how tradition and innovation can come together—and how a small village can continue to grow, one sausage at a time.
